Drayton Hall was the only plantation house among the Ashley River Historic District to survive both the Revolutionary and the Civil Wars. It is one of the finest examples of Palladian architecture found in the United States. The house was built in the early 1700s by John Drayton, third son of the Draytons who owned Magnolia Plantation. It is listed as a National Historic Landmark and is controlled by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
