1690 Caroline (French map of Carolina)

Caroline, as the French called Carolina, was a prize for the European explorers to claim for their nations. Both the Spanish and the French attempted settlements along the Carolina coast in the 1500s and1600s. These attempts proved unsuccessful due to a number of issues including attacks by the Native Americans, fighting among the two nations, disease, and lack of preparation. Not until the English arrived in 1670, did a permanent settlement remain on the Carolina coast, although the Spanish settlement at St. Augustine (located at the St. John's River in northern Florida) was settled in the late 1500s.
