Lowry Coe

Lowry Coe lived in the Washington, DC area nearly all his life. For about forty years, he owned his own company, Coe Communications, where he wrote and produced documentaries for the US government and international companies – in Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Okinawa, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Panama, and the Caribbean as well as throughout the United States. A film he produced on the King Tut Exhibit was nominated for an Academy Award. After suffering a stroke, he was forced to retire. In 2000, he moved the Charleston area to be closer to his daughters and their families. With more time on his hands, he turned to an early interest, art.

Coe had no formal training in the arts, but he knew that he enjoyed drawing and cartooning in college and worked as an animator while he served as an officer in the Navy. He did his first painting when he was in his thirties. One of his first efforts, a painting of the crowds of young people on the beach in Rehoboth Beach, DE, won First Place in the Rehoboth Art League summer festival.

After he arrived in Mt Pleasant, he took up painting again. In the nine years that he has been here, he has won a number of awards for his art, including the Blessing of the Fleet poster contest twice, the first place award on two occasions at the Mt Pleasant Artist Guild Spring Arts Festival, as well as the People’s Choice award and an honorable mention at the same Festival. He also has won the poster contest for the Isle of Palms Connector Run and Walk for the Child.

In the spring of 2005, Coe was commissioned to do a painting for the opening of the Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge. A limited edition print was made of this painting for the guests of the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina during the celebration activities.

Coe’s latest endeavors have been the pen and ink drawings of Charleston area churches and Lowcountry scenes. At the urging of family and friends for whom he had drawn the sketches, he decided to make them available to the public through Lowcountry Sketches. Today his work is bringing pleasure to brides and grooms, members of local churches, and those who just love the beautiful sites and scenes of the Lowcountry.
